Acupuncture, originating in China approximately 5,000 years ago, is one of the oldest healing forms known to mankind. This healing system has been used successfully to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. According to traditional acupuncture theory, energy pathways, called meridians, run through the body and are linked to the vital organs. The energy that flows through these meridians is called Ch’i, the life force. Physical and emotional health depends on the free flow of this Ch’i through the meridians, while an imbalance in the flow of Ch’i results in illness. Pain and other symptoms are the distress signals which tell us that some energy imbalance exists. Imbalances may be the result of any number of factors, such as climatic conditions, infections, trauma, heredity, dietary practices, or emotional states.

The acupuncture treatment sets out to correct an imbalance by reestablishing the natural flow of Ch’i. To do this, the acupuncturist gently inserts a needle at special points located along the meridian. When the needle is manipulated in a particular way, energy is either drawn to the meridian or dispersed away from it. When the natural flow is reestablished, nature’s own healing forces go to work.

Acupuncture needles are sterile and disposable. They are as slender as human hair and are solid yet flexible. They bear no resemblance to a hypodermic needle. The points where the needles will be inserted will be determined by the unique circumstances presented by the patient. Moxibustion, the application of a warming herb, may also be used in combination with acupuncture needles.

The acupuncturist closely listens to and observes the patient and feels twelve different pulses along the patient’s wrists. These observations will be considered along with information about the patient’s health history, the family health history, diet, work and living habits, and emotional life. The acupuncturist focuses on determining the underlying cause of the imbalance and is not merely treating the symptoms of disease.

People of all types with a wide variety of complaints come for acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture is the first treatment of choice for some people, while others use it in conjunction with Western medicine. Some patients find acupuncture very beneficial where other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful.

The World Health Organization lists 43 diseases that acupuncture successfully treats. Among those are respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, endocrine imbalances, insomnia, low back pain, migraine headaches, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.

As well as seeking help for physical problems, many people come seeking relief from stress-related disorders and effects of mental and emotional conflict in their lives. Classical acupuncture affects the whole person – body, mind and spirit – and will help a wide range of health problems.

The first appointment is approximately two hours in length. Thereafter, treatments take 45 minutes to one hour.

The duration and frequency of treatment depends upon many factors, including the severity and history of the imbalance. Most people will need treatment once or twice during the first week and then once a week for a few weeks until some improvement has been maintained. Then the treatments will be gradually spaced further apart.

“I got my life back with acupuncture. I had been taking Vicodin four times a day for three years for severe back pain. After getting treated with acupuncture, I am now pain-free and Vicodin-free. Karen is a gift from the universe.”    NG, retired program analyst

“Karen is very dedicated to her profession and her patients, consistently giving exceptional care. I have been treated by Karen for 12 years and I come out of our sessions feeling energized and rejuvenated yet very calm. I trust her completely and can’t imagine not seeing her on a regular basis.”    RA, retired

“I have been an acupuncture client of Karen’s for about 15 years. She has effectively treated me for a wide range of physical, emotional and spiritual issues during that time. Karen is undoubtedly skilled as an acupuncturist—I have had amazing results with her treatments. But what most distinguishes Karen is her kindness, compassion and caring; I always feel nurtured and supported after I’ve seen her. She is a true healer!”    DC, attorney

“I highly recommend Karen Vartanian and acupuncture. I have got to be one of her biggest advocates. She is such a talented and kind woman.
I started going to Karen about 6 years ago for fertility issues. I was anxious to get pregnant but hadn’t even had a period for a year. My Gynecologist and Primary Care Physician really didn’t have any answers for me nor did they really even try to find an answer. I was frustrated and in hopes of finding something to help me. I found Karen and within 6 weeks of going to her I started having periods and within 6 months I was pregnant. The acupuncture was also helpful in controlling my anxiety. I truly felt that Karen was a huge part in helping to get me pregnant. So much, that when I found out I was pregnant, I called her and said, “We did it. I got pregnant”. My husband responded with, “Hey, what about me; wasn’t I involved here?”
She also helped me with my second child. I had two miscarriages after my son. After the last miscarriage, I went back to Karen in hopes of getting some help again. After a few treatments, I was pregnant again and now have a happy baby girl. I truly feel that acupuncture was what was missing and was what I needed to help me with having my second child.
I still love going to Karen to help with anxiety and to regulate my hormones. I love going to acupuncture and immediately feel calmed and relaxed when I go. Again, I highly recommend Karen’s service to anyone.”
   SW, mother and teacher

“For dis-ease of any kind – physical, emotional, mental—my first and most drastic course of action is always to call Karen. With her personal wisdom and deep knowledge of the science of acupuncture, she is a powerful healer.”    SKR, dancer

“I originally started seeing Karen for chronic sinusitis, which she was able to relieve, and over time, eliminate. Along the way, I leaned how many health conditions are improved through acupuncture: menopause symptoms, headaches, and a variety of aches and pains related to my scoliosis. My favorite treatments with Karen are my “seasonal tune-ups”, when my body gets help transitioning from one season to the next.”    STS, college professor

“I had never considered acupuncture before, because I was skeptical and couldn’t imagine it would be helpful. A good friend recommended Karen, and I decided to give acupuncture a try with her because of a specific problem I was having at the time. I very quickly found Karen’s presence and the acupuncture itself very healing in many ways.
The symptoms that brought me to her office are long gone, and I have continued to see her over the past nine years to maintain good health and to work with any problems that occur along the way due to the physical and other stresses of life.”
